Screening a Loch Lomond Vista for Hotel Diners
The Lodge on Loch Lomond is a hotel with stunning views across the loch. Boasting 48 guest bedrooms, the hotel is located directly on the water's edge, and its incredible vista attracts guests from around the world.
When the owners of The Lodge on Loch Lomond decided to refurbish their waterfront restaurant, they knew they needed to ensure their guests' comfort without obscuring or distracting from that signature view. Having looked at the various options available, the hotel's owner, Niall Colquhoun, decided to get in touch with Phantom Screens.
The atmosphere at The Lodge on Loch Lomond was intimate and charming, and it was important that the newly refurbished Colquhoun's Restaurant and Lounge continued to deliver that relaxed, comfortable ambience. The extensive glazing on the restaurant's east side provided the incredible vista. Hotel guests would use it as a place to relax and unwind throughout the day while watching the changing landscape of the loch.
Phantom Screens was pleased to have the opportunity to work with such a prestigious and picturesque venue. Thanks to its celebrated cuisine, amazing views, and comfortable atmosphere, The Lodge on Loch Lomond had been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor in 2018 and had been recognised by the Scottish Hotel Awards several times. Naturally, Niall was keen to maintain the venue's excellent reputation.
Changes to the façade of the hotel had been planned for some time, and Niall had identified Phantom Screens as the ideal solution for the update. In order to preserve the priceless view and match the new frameless folding glass windows, he opted for Phantom Screens with single mesh panels and no joins.
The restaurant had been showered with awards for its cuisine, and as a result was popular with hotel guests and diners throughout the day. The lodge is located on the west side of the loch, which gives breakfast diners the opportunity to watch the sun rise over the water. One of the advantages of Phantom Screens is that our meshes can help to reduce glare and control solar heat gain without obstructing the view. Phantom Screens insect meshes can provide up to 55% UV blockage, while our solar meshes block up to 95%.
Commercial venues tend to investigate all available options for screening glass, such as blinds and tinted windows. Like Niall, they soon discover the shortcomings of common solutions - for example, window tinting film and integrated blinds are only effective when windows are closed, which can make it difficult to effectively ventilate the space.
Traditional blinds that are not integrated can be deployed while windows are open and do cut UV rays - but they also obscure the view and do not prevent insect ingress. As a result, Phantom Screens represented a more comprehensive solution to the challenges of creating a comfortable environment for diners.
Another option commonly considered by hotels and restaurants is low-E or low-emissivity glass. This is a type of coated glass that is designed to reflect heat in the form of long-wave infrared energy. One of the disadvantages of low-E glass is that it tends to be reflective when viewed from the outside, which can mar the external appearance of the property. It also requires the windows to be closed in order to be effective, which, in this case, ran counter to the goal of improving ventilation.
The Lodge on Loch Lomond had contacted Phantom Screens prior to the refurbishment, which gave our experts the opportunity to plan out a recessed installation that blended in with the new look. The result is that when viewed from most angles, the rails and cartridges are hidden from view, minimising their impact on the restaurant's interior design.
Rather than having staff stand between the tables to deploy each screen manually, Niall opted for an automated installation that could be operated at the touch of a button. A motor winds and unwinds the screens when required, and the screens automatically retract into a cartridge installed in the roof above the windows. This can be operated by a remote control, or even connected to a smart home hub and programmed to deploy at specific times of day.
In the case of The Lodge on Loch Lomond, six Executive Screens were installed. These were then programmed to operate in two groups. The first three screens comprised Group 1 and the next three screens were designated Group 2.
Each group has its own dedicated remote control, meaning Group 1 can be moved independently of Group 2. There is also a Master Remote, which controls all the screens at once, as well as the option to move any one of the screens independently. This provided Niall and his team with maximum flexibility to ensure their guests' comfort.
For a large venue like this, utility bills can be significant. This is another reason that Phantom Screens represent a smart long-term investment for business owners. Phantom Screens can reduce solar heat gain and UV damage. This can help owners to be more efficient when it comes to cooling bills, and also reduces the need to replace textiles and printed collateral due to sun damage.
Although in this case a recessed installation was possible, there are situations when one is impractical. In these scenarios, Phantom Screens can also be installed on the exterior of the venue. They are constructed in a manner that protects the motor from the elements and that stabilises the mesh in windy conditions.
The meshes are made from a polyester or fibreglass weave with a PVC coating for added durability, making them suitable for outdoor use. Cleaning the housing is a simple case of wiping it with a non-abrasive detergent and a soft cloth or sponge. To clean the mesh, all that's required is a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove debris and a soft, damp cloth to wipe it down.
For venues like the Lodge on Loch Lomond, every element is carefully considered to ensure the best experience for the customer. This includes aesthetic choices, which is why Phantom Screens are designed to have minimal visual impact. We also offer colour matching to help designers and owners maintain a consistent colour palette. Phantom Screens can be finished in any RAL colour, which means we can always find a colour that will match or complement your venue's existing scheme.
Following the installation, Niall told Phantom Screens: "I have been dreaming about installing your screens for years now. Today we reopened our restaurant and they look magnificent. Thank you very much."
